The domestic market indices opened positively for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, but could not sustain at higher levels. Nifty came under pressure immediately after opening in the green but recovered immediately.
Key Indices: Sensex and Nifty Performance Highlights
The key indices slipped in the late morning session as the session progressed and ended in the red. The Nifty index settled below the 23750 mark at the close.
The market witnessed a selling pressure in metal, public sector banks, and IT stocks. The trading volume was subdued as investors reduced their position ahead of the festive session. Analysts are expecting subdued trading activity in the coming days due to the absence of any major events and the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended lower by 67.30 points or 0.09% to 78472.87. The Nifty index was down by 25.80 points or 0.11% to 23727.65. The top gainers were Tata Motors, Adani Enterprise, and BPCL. The top losers were Power Grid, JSW Steel, and SBI Life Insurance. The broader markets closed mixed, as the Nifty midcap index closed lower by 0.06%, while the Nifty smallcap index ended 0.24% higher.
The market breadth was slightly negative, as 1167 shares advanced in NSE while 1201 shares declined on Tuesday. The India VIX, the volatility index of NSE declined by 2.53% to 13.18. Indian stock markets will remain shut on Wednesday, 25 December 2024 on the occasion of the Christmas Holiday.
The S&P BSE Sensex was down 67.30 points or 0.09% to 78,472.87. The Nifty 50 index shed 25.80 points or 0.11% to 23,727.65.
JSW Steel (down 1.54%), Titan Company (down 0.98%) and Infosys (down 0.76%) were major drags.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.09% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index added 0.37%.
The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1977 shares rose and 2019 shares fell. A total of 96 shares were unchanged.
The NSE’s India VIX, a gauge of the market’s expectation of volatility over the near term, declined 2.53% to 13.18.
The domestic market will remain shut on Wednesday, 25 December 2024, for Christmas.
